Detailed Solution

The UK is not a federal country.
The UK is an example of a unitary country. In a unitary system, either the sub-units report to the central government or there is just one level of government. In a federal system, the power is shared among the different levels of government. This is done to avoid the maximum concentration of power in single hands. There is horizontal as well as the vertical division of power. The horizontal division of power follows the principle of checks and balances. The vertical division of power constitutionally distributes the subjects among the central government and governments at the sub-unit level. The government at the sub-unit level is known by different terminologies. Examples of federal countries are India, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, etc. Examples of non-federal countries are the United Kingdom, China, France, Japan, etc.
