Reducing sugars are those which contain free CHO group or Keto group linked to CH₂OH group. They react with tollens or Fehling’s reagent and give respect test positive. Usually monosaccharides and all disaccharides give the test except Sucrose.

Non-Reducing sugars are those which do not contain free CHO group or Keto group linked to CH₂OH , but ether of ketal forms of group. They don’t react with tollens or Fehling’s reagent and give respect test. Examples are Sucrose, cellulose, starch.
