Detailed Solution

Kanchipuram, Tirupati, and Thanjavur are known as temple towns.
Temple towns play a central role in speeding up urbanisation, i.e., the process by which cities develop and flourish. Rulers constructed temples to demonstrate their spiritual connection with God. At the same time, temples attracted pilgrims who would like to make donations occasionally. Rulers would endow temples with grants to conduct rituals, feed visitors and celebrate festivals. Temple authorities desired to use their wealth to finance banking and trade. Gradually, workers, priests, artisans, and traders settled next to the temple to cater to the needs of the pilgrims. Thus, towns started to emerge around temples such as the ones in Bhillasvamin and Somnath. Important temple towns included Madurai and Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, and Thanjavur, the capital of Cholas.
