Both a spring balance and a beam balance are used to measure the weight of an object.  The weight of an object is the force with which it is pulled by the gravitational force. A Newton, which is equal to kg m/s2, is the SI unit of weight. The formula W = mg, which denotes weight as the gravitational force exerted on a mass, can be written as kg m/s2, which is equivalent to Newton.
