Detailed Solution

  • Frictional force opposes the motion of the bodies against each other. It arises due to the interlocking of the irregularities present in the surfaces.
  • Sliding friction is the force of friction between two bodies in motion. In this case, the bodies are continuously in contact with each other. Therefore, the irregularities between the surfaces get interlocked, which causes higher frictional force.
  • In rolling friction, the object is continuously rolling on a surface, so the surface of the object does not get enough time to interlock with the other surface. Hence the rolling friction is smaller than the sliding friction.
  • Therefore we can say sliding friction is always greater than rolling friction. This is why wheels and round objects are preferred more.
