Italy was one of the Axis powers in the Second World War.
After the Enabling Act of 1933, which enabled dictatorship in Germany, Hitler acquired powers to rule by decree and sideline the Parliament. The Nazi party created security forces and special surveillance to control and shape society as per the ruling party's desires. As part of Hitler's reconstruction efforts, he assigned the economist Hjalmar Schacht full responsibility for the country's financial recovery. Hitler was also successful in his foreign policies, but his excessive investments in rearmament adversely impacted the nation's economy. Hjalmar Schacht had asked Hitler to be cautious as the nation still ran on deficit financing. Schacht had to leave when Hitler couldn't agree with the economist's views. Hitler decided war was the only way to overcome the looming economic crisis. So the Second World War began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Japan and Italy signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany in 1940, thus forming the Axis powers in the war. The Allies were initially led by France and England and later joined by the USSR and the USA.
