Detailed Solution

The marshy mangroves of West Bengal and Assam are suitable habitats for the one-horned rhinos. These floodplains formed by the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers support their survival. The wet, cool climate of the marshy lands helps them withstand the scorching heat during the day. The one-horned rhinos were numerous at a point in time, but their numbers rapidly decreased, taking them to the brink of extinction. Poaching causes this rapid decrease in the number of Indian rhinos. They are known to be keystone species whose disappearance could destroy the region's ecological balance. The Kaziranga National Park, a world heritage site, has the highest number of one-horned rhinos worldwide.
