Maru Raikas reared camels. The Raikas were people who lived in Rajasthan's deserts. The region saw sparse and erratic rainfall. Harvests on cultivated land varied every year. No crop could be cultivated over such a large area. The Raikas merged farming and pastoralism as a result. The Raikas of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner lived in their home villages during the monsoons because there was pasture there. They left in search of new pasture and water in October when these grazing areas were dry and worn out; they came back during the subsequent monsoon. Another tribe of Raikas raised sheep and goats, while the Maru (desert) Raikas herded camels.
