What do Tier-1 & Tier-2 mean

Tier-1 colleges are typically the elite engineering institutes. They have very high admission cutoffs, top infrastructure, strong research output, well-known faculty, excellent placement records, national/international recognition, and strong alumni networks.
Tier-2 colleges are very good engineering colleges too, though they may lag a bit on one or more of the Tier-1 parameters (e.g. research, infrastructure, placement packages). They are often more accessible in terms of cutoff, cost, geographic spread, and/or regional reputation.
