The Balkan states were the most serious source of nationalist tension in Europe after 1871. Balkan states constitute southeastern Europe, including Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Moldova and many other states. With the spread of the idea of nationalism and romanticism, the Slavic nationalists' struggle started in the nineteenth century to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire. These Slavic states were very small in size and jealous of each other. They were ready to gain independence at the cost of others. The disintegration of the Ottoman Empire created a spark of unrest in terms of nationalist tension.
