Detailed Solution

The Balkans was the most severe source of nationalist tension in Europe after 1871.
The Balkans consisted of Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, Greece, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro. Initially, the more significant part of the Balkans was under Ottoman Empire’s governance. After the European subjects disintegrated and broke away from Ottoman control, they asserted their right to independence. This situation caused intense conflict and several Balkan wars in the area, ultimately leading to the First World War.
