Detailed Solution

Article 17 of the Constitution of India deals with ‘Abolition of Untouchability’. Untouchability refers to a social evil which is based upon the evils of the caste system. It considers the people of the lower caste and marginalised sections as inferior and the upper caste people as superior. Under the doomed evil of untouchability, the marginalised people were discriminated against and were not even treated with basic dignity. They were not allowed to enter temples or drink water from the same wells as the upper caste people. The Constitution of India officially abolished this social evil and declared it a punishable offence.
