Detailed Solution

The Suez Canal shortened the distance between India and Europe.
  • This artificial channel was built in 1869 in Egypt between Port Said in the north and Port Suez in the south to connect the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
  • It gives Europe another entryway to the Indian Ocean. It considerably diminishes direct ocean course distance (around 6,000 km) on the journey from London and Liverpool to Mumbai, contrasted with the Cape of Great Hope Route.
  • It is an ocean-level channel without locks and is around 160 km long. Around 100 boats travelled every day against 17 in 1938.
