Detailed Solution

To test the presence of protein in a given food sample, we need to perform the following steps.

  • Take the food sample in the form of a paste or powder.
  • Take a test tube and pour a small amount of the food sample into it. Now add 10 drops of water and shake the test tube.
  • Add two drops of copper sulphate solution and ten drops of caustic soda solution to the test tube with the help of a dropper.
  • Allow the contents to settle for some time.
  • If the contents in the test tube turn violet in colour after some time, the presence of proteins can be inferred.

Thus, to test the presence of proteins in a given food sample, solutions of copper sulphate and caustic soda are used.
