The city of Surat, which is a part of the Western State of Gujarat in India, suffered from the plague in 1994. The problem was caused by negligence on the part of the city's residents and the municipal corporation. Adequate attention wasn't paid to the sanitation of the town. Local hotels and restaurants continued to throw garbage on roads and into drains. When the plague spread, many people lost their lives, and many more had to leave the city, searching for a safer haven. The corporation and the citizens did learn a lesson after this tragic incident.
