Detailed Solution

Petrograd became the new name for St. Petersburg. The name St. Petersburg was derived from German. Because of the First World War, the name was altered in 1914. The Russian people were at odds with the Germans. Germany belonged to the Central Powers, whilst Russia belonged to the Allied Group. Another reason was that they were confronting each other on the battlefield, which caused anxiety among the civilians. To appease the populace, the Imperial administration dubbed St. Petersburg Petrograd. However, the term "Petrograd" was only used for ten years, from 1914 to 1924. After Lenin died in 1924, the city's name was changed to commemorate his contribution.
