Sri Lankan Tamils felt alienated due to the government measures that tried to establish Sinhala supremacy in Sri Lanka.
The major social groups in Sri Lanka were the Sinhala speakers constituting 74 per cent of the population, and the Tamil speakers constituting 18 percent of the country. Most of the Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, while most of the Tamil speakers were Hindus or Muslims. Since the majority of Sri Lankans speak Sinhala, they quickly consolidated their political power once the nation became independent and democratic in 1948. Following this, in 1956, an Act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the only official language, disregarding Tamil. A new constitution specified that the state foster Buddhism. Consequently, the Sri Lankan Tamils felt further alienated. They believed that none of the major political parties led by Buddhist Sinhala leaders was sensitive to their culture and language. Thus, the relations between the two communities became strained, leading to a devastating civil war.
