The bidri community is famous for bidriware. It was thought to have started in the 14th century AD, during the rule of the Bahamian Sultans. Thus, "Bidriware" refers to the production of distinctive metalware that carries the name of the Bidar region. While the bidriware is an entirely Indian invention, the 500-year-old art is Persian in origin. This engraving and inlaying craft is unique to Bidar and passed down through the years. Allauddin II of Bidar (reigned from 1434 to 1457 AD) was impressed by items given to him during his coronation and encouraged the artisans to live in Bidar. He gave it the name "Bidari" or "Bidri," which is still recognised today. It is a delicate and complicated technique practised on zinc, copper, and inlaid with pure silver or thin sheets.
