Detailed Solution

Austria dominated most of Germany before the 1860s.
Prussia challenged the domination of Austria in the 1860s for the unification process. Otto Von Bismarck was responsible for making Europe's most powerful industrial country from a loose tangle of 39 states. However, Prussia engaged in war with Austria, Denmark and France for more than seven years to attain autonomy over these regions. Finally, the wars ended with Prussia being victorious, resulting in Prussian King William I being proclaimed the German Emperor. The consolidation was declared on 18 January 1871 in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. Thus Germany was declared a nation-state in 1871.
