South Asia had the largest concentration of poor in 2005.
  • Recently, poverty in South Asia has been decreasing. In 1981 more than 50 per cent of the population lived below the poverty line, but in 2001, it was approximately 30 per cent.
  • In countries belonging to South Asia, such as India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, the decline in poverty has also been rapid, from 34% in 2005 to just 15.2% in 2014. The number of poor has also declined significantly in line with the decline in the percentage of the poor.
