Nepal has witnessed several people’s struggles for democracy.
Many people in Nepal have fought the fight for democracy. Democracy was founded in 1990 after a 12-year civil war lasted until 2002. King Gyanendra started assuming control of several areas of the administration with the help of the army in October 2002, claiming the Maoist insurgency in the countryside as his justification. The King then officially assumed his position as ruler in February 2005. The Maoists and other political parties signed a 12-point accord in November 2005. This accord symbolised to the general population that democracy and peace would soon return. This democratic populist movement started gathering tremendous momentum in 2006. Eventually, in April 2006, the King reconstituted the Third Parliament and requested the political parties to form a government after consistently rejecting the few concessions the King offered. Nepal enacted an interim Constitution in 2007.
