Detailed Solution

August 16th, 1946, was declared "Direct Action Day."
The British cabinet dispatched a three-person mission to Delhi in March 1946, recommending that India maintain its unity and organise as a loose confederation with some autonomy for regions with a Muslim majority. However, it was unable to persuade the Muslim League and Indian National Congress. Following the Cabinet Mission's failure, the Muslim League planned to launch a massive agitation to secure its demand for Pakistan. It declared August 16th, 1946, to be "Direct Action Day." Riots started on this day in Calcutta, and by March 1947, the unrest had expanded to other areas of northern India.
