The economist John Maynard Keynes opined that the Indian gold exports boosted the recovery of the global economy.
Peasants in India became more indebted during the Great Depression (1929–1939). To cover their expenses during these times, they had to sell off their remaining jewellery and precious metals, use all their money and mortgage their land. As a result, India started exporting precious metals during the Great Depression, particularly gold. In light of this, John Maynard Keynes, a renowned economist, believed that Indian gold exports aided the global economic recovery. They undoubtedly hastened Britain's recovery but had little impact on Indian peasants. As a result, rural India was rife with unrest when Mahatma Gandhi began the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1931, at the height of the Depression.
