Rashsundari Debi, a famous Bengali woman, penned her autobiography in 1876.
Women's lives and emotions started to be expressed in vivid and emotional ways. Thus, the number of women who read increased significantly in middle-class households. However, this was an exception. Most households were quite conservative. For example, Rashsundari Debi, a young married woman living in a highly traditional home in East Bengal around the turn of the nineteenth century, learned to read in her kitchen. Later, she penned Amar Jiban, her autobiography, in 1876. Thus it was the first comprehensive autobiography in Bengali to be published.
