Kailashbashini Debi, Tarabai Shinde, and Pandita Ramabai were the female writers who highlighted women's experiences in the late 19th century. Due to social reforms and publications, it had already been established that women's lives and emotions were the focus of intense concern. Beginning in the 1860s, some Bengali women, notably Kailashbashini Debi, wrote articles on how women were imprisoned at home, kept in the dark, and forced to do arduous domestic labour. They were compelled to work and were mistreated by those they were supposed to serve. In the 1880s, Maharashtra Ramabai spoke venomously about her subjects' wretched lives. The pathetic lives of Hindu upper-caste ladies, particularly widows, are also evident in the works of Tarabai Shinde and Pandita Pati. Thus many novels highlighted what reading meant to uneducated women and how women were greatly hampered by social conventions.
