The gases involved in the process of breathing are oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). During inhalation, oxygen is taken in through the lungs and diffuses into the bloodstream, where it is transported to cells throughout the body for use in cellular respiration, a process that produces energy for the body.
