Lord Jagannath was identified with Lord Vishnu.Anantavarman, one of the most powerful Ganga Dynasty monarchs, built a shrine for Purushottama Jagannatha in Puri, Odisha, in the 12th century. Because tribal people living nearby used to sculpt wooden idols of the deity prior to becoming linked with Lord Vishnu, it is probable that the deity was originally a local god before becoming associated with Lord Vishnu. Puri's Jagannatha Temple, which dates from the 12th century, towers over the city. The sanctuary of the temple contains wooden statues of Jagannatha, his sister Subhadra, and their brother Balarama. In contrast to the more well-known Buddha, Jagannatha is usually represented as one of Vishnu's ten avatars (incarnations) in current Puri artwork.
