Detailed Solution

William Bentinck, Governor-General of India, helped declare the custom of Sati illegal.
Lord William Bentinck, the nation's then Governor-General, signed the Bengal Sati Regulation, outlawing the practice of Sati throughout British India. The Hindu custom of incinerating a woman over her husband's funeral pyre was known as Sati. Although there was no Vedic justification for this practice, it was practised in many regions of India. Ascending to heaven as a widow was thought to be the ultimate act of sacrifice and testament to a wife's fidelity to her husband. The renowned Bengali Hindu reformer Raja Rammohan Roy battled numerous social evils that plagued Hindu society, Sati Pratha being one of them.
