The group maru of Raikas herded camels.
The pastoralist group of Rajasthan is known as Raikas that rear sheep and goats. In addition to these, there is another group of Raikas known as Maru (Desert) Raikas. Maru raikas are engaged in the rearing of camels. The settlement of Maru is known as Dhandi. They are engaged in the sale and buying of camels at fairs. The training of camels is the expertise of Maru Raikas. During the rainy season, they reside in their home villages near the Thar desert in areas of Bikaner, Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur where pasture is available. In October, as the monsoon ends and the village pastures become dry, they move to other places in search of grazing land for their cattle.
