The thyroid gland takes up iodine from the bloodstream and incorporates it into the structure of thyroxine. This iodination process involves attaching iodine atoms to the amino acid tyrosine, which is a component of the thyroxine molecule. The result is the formation of both monoiodotyrosine (MIT) and diiodotyrosine (DIT) molecules, which then combine to form thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), another thyroid hormone.

Iodine deficiency can lead to decreased production of thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which in turn can result in thyroid disorders and disruption of various bodily functions.
