On April 13, the infamous Jallianwalla Bagh massacre occurred as General Dyer took command and ordered to open fire on a peaceful, unarmed gathering of protesters. On that day, a large crowd assembled in the enclosed area of Jallianwalla Bagh. Some came to protest against the government's new repressive measures by the Rowlatt Act. At the same time, many had come to attend the annual Baisakhi Festival. Most residents from the countryside were unaware of the martial law imposed. Nevertheless, Dyer entered the Bagh, blocked all exits, and opened fire on an unarmed crowd, killing hundreds.
