Detailed Solution

The three horizontal divisions of power are between Legislature, executive and judiciary.
In a democratic government, the power is usually divided among three bodies of government, i.e. the Legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. These three bodies have powers given by the constitution to keep a check and balance on other organs' power so that no single body of the government exercises too much of its power and can be kept in balance. The principle of checks and balances is defined as each branch of the state's power limiting or checking the other two, thus creating a balance between the three powers of the state. This separation of power is practised in democratic countries such as India and the USA.
