The correct order of arrival of the southwest monsoon is from Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Lucknow, and Chandigarh. The southwest monsoon winds enter India from the southern side. It approaches the Kerala coast and enters the Indian peninsula, splitting into two branches - the Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal Branch. The varied topography of India is the main reason for this splitting of the monsoon wind. The monsoons approach Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala at the beginning of June and proceed northwards as the two branches. Then it reaches Mumbai on the west coast by mid-June. Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh experiences monsoons by the end of June or the beginning of June and causes rainfall in the nearby Punjab plains (Chandigarh) during the same time.
