Xerarch succession (Xerosere) occurs in xeric conditions (extremely dry environments). In this succession, the growth of species at different stages is restricted by the availability of water. 

• It begins when the bare rocks are formed and colonized by lichens and mosses.
• These are followed by herbs and shrubs.
• Finally, trees develop and form forests as the climax community.
