Detailed Solution

Punjab is the largest producer of wheat. Wheat is a rabi crop grown in winter, October-November, and harvested in summer, April- May. It needs 50 to 75 cm of annual rainfall evenly distributed over the growing season. There are two important wheat-growing belts in the nation – the Ganga-Satluj plains in the northwest and the black soil region of the Deccan. It is one of the staple foods, especially in the northern and northwestern parts of India. After the Green Revolution and the modernisation of agriculture,  Punjab, Haryana, became the largest wheat producer. Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and parts of Madhya Pradesh are some other wheat-producing states.
