In the north and north-western part of the country, wheat occupies around 85% of the total land. Approximately 12.8% of the world's wheat is produced in India (2017). It is mostly a crop grown in temperate regions. As a result, it is grown in India during the rabi season, which is winter. It is primarily farmed under irrigation conditions because it is a rabi crop. However, it is a rainfed crop in Madhya Pradesh's Malwa plateau and sections of the Himalayan highlands.
