Detailed Solution

The broad gauge is the most used gauge in Indian railways. Gauge is a term used for the distance between the parallel rails of the railway track. Indian railways have all three gauges laid across different parts of the country. There is about 113,994 km track length, of which 102,680 km is broad gauge, 8561 km is metre gauge, and 2753 km is narrow gauge. Project Unigauge, launched by the government, aims to unify the gauges by converting the metre and narrow gauges to broad gauges. Broad gauges enable the trains to have more spacious carriages for the goods and passengers. As of March 2022, almost 80% of broad gauges are electrified, and most of the metre gauges are converted to broad gauges. Hilly regions like Darjeeling and Shimla have narrow gauges.
