Detailed Solution

Chennai is the oldest artificial seaport.
Chennai Port, an artificial port located on the east coast of India, is the second-largest container port in India. It is one of the oldest ports and the largest one in the Bay of Bengal. The Madras port was inaugurated in 1881, although maritime trade began around 1639. An artificial port was created due to the absence of a natural harbour. Before independence, the port was used for travel, but post-independence, it developed into a container port. The port was called the Chennai port after Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996. The port has a strategic location for import and export to South India and is known as the Gateway of South India.
