Detailed Solution

Dutch is spoken on the majority level in the Flemish area of Belgium. An additional 40% of people in Wallonia are French speakers. The remaining 1% of Belgians speak German well. In Brussels, the country's capital, 80% of the population speaks French and 20% Dutch. The minority French-speaking population was influential and affluent in the 1950s/60s. The Dutch-speaking community, which would benefit from economic success and education much later than the French speakers, was outraged. This led to conflicts between the Dutch and French-speaking communities in the 1950s and 1960s. In Brussels, the conflict between the two communities was particularly pronounced.
