The German language is spoken on the majority level in the country.
In Belgium, the Flemish region has 59 per cent of the population and speaks Dutch. Wallonia has another 40% of the population that speaks French. The remaining 1% of Belgians are fluent in German. In Brussels, the capital city, 80 per cent of people speak French, while 20 per cent speak Dutch. The minority French-speaking community was prosperous and powerful. Outraged was the Dutch-speaking community, which would later profit from economic prosperity and education. During the 1950s and 1960s, this produced conflicts between the Dutch- and French-speaking communities. The tension between the two communities was particularly obvious in Brussels. The Dutch-speaking population was a majority in the country but a minority in Brussels, posing a unique challenge.
