Hector was forced to learn Afrikaans. Maya Naidoo, a young South African girl of eleven who lives in the city of Johannesburg, was assisting her mother in getting rid of some old boxes. She discovered a scrapbook filled with images and news clippings. There were several images of a young schoolboy, about fifteen years old. Hector Pieterson was the kid's name when his mother asked who he was. The cops had fired a shot at him. Maya was in awe. Why she questioned, her mother said that apartheid rules once controlled South Africa. Separation based on race is known as apartheid. The races of South Africans were white, black, Indian, and coloured. The legislation prohibited these races from socialising, residing close to one another, or even using shared amenities. The South Western Township was one black township (Soweto). The protest against teaching the Afrikaans language in schools was joined by Hector Pieterson, a resident of this area, and his classmates. The white people spoke this language. Hector and other pupils at the school were required to learn this language, but they preferred to study Zulu, their native tongue. The protesters were brutally assaulted by the South African police, who also opened fire on the gathering. Hector was slain by one of their shots. This occurred on June 16, 1976.
