The Union list includes subjects of national importance such as defense of the country, foreign affairs, banking, communications and currency. The Constitution divides legislative subjects between the Union and the states into three lists in the Seventh Schedule:
●        List-I (the Union List)
●        List-II (the State List)
●        List-III (the Concurrent List).
I. The Parliament has sole legislative authority over any of the matters listed in the Union List. This list now includes 100 subjects (from 97 originally) such as defense, banking, foreign affairs, currency, atomic energy, insurance, communication, inter-state trade and commerce, census, and audit.
II. Under normal circumstances, the state legislature has sole authority to make laws concerning any of the matters listed in the State List. This now includes 61 subjects (from 66 originally) such as public order, police, public health and sanitation, agriculture, prisons, local government, fisheries, markets, theaters, gambling, and so on.
III. The Parliament and state legislatures can both pass laws on any of the issues listed in the Concurrent List.
