Sinhalas are the major social group that constitutes the largest share of the Sri Lankan population.
The Sinhalese are known to be the largest ethnic group in the country, with around 11 million people. The Act, passed in 1956, recognised Sinhala as the official language of Sri Lanka. The policies were made to favour the Sinhala community, and preferences were given in university positions and government jobs to the Sinhalese. In addition, Buddhism was fostered and protected in the country. However, this led to discrimination against the Tamils. As a result, conflicts between the two communities began.
