Detailed Solution

When setting gemstones (especially diamonds), the choice of metal can influence visual appearance (colour, brilliance), security of the setting (prongs, claws, bezel), and how the overall jewellery piece presents itself.

Platinum

  • Because platinum is a naturally white metal, it provides a neutral, bright backdrop for colourless or near-colourless diamonds, allowing the stone’s brilliance and fire to stand out without colour-cast from the metal.
  • The high density and strength of platinum allow for narrower prongs or more secure settings (less metal may be needed to hold the stone), which can enhance the appearance of the gemstone and increase light entry.
  • Its robust nature makes it especially suitable for valuable stones that will be worn daily — the setting is less likely to deform, lose metal or allow the stone to become loose over time.

Gold

  • Gold provides warm colour options (yellow, rose) that can enhance coloured gemstones (rubies, sapphires, emeralds) by complementing their hues; for example, yellow gold can add warmth to certain stones.
  • White gold offers a white metal look (via rhodium plating), which can mimic platinum. For budget-conscious buyers, white gold can be a good choice for diamonds, though one must account for future plating/re-finish.
  • However, because some gold alloys use rhodium plating (in case of white gold) or may have slight colour cast (in yellow/rose gold), the choice of colour-metal may slightly affect how “white” a diamond appears. Some buyers feel that platinum is “better” for truly showcasing high-grade colourless diamonds.

If the gemstone is a colourless or nearly colourless diamond, and the aim is maximum light performance and a neutral white metal setting, platinum tends to be the superior choice. If the gemstone is coloured, or the buyer prefers a warm metal tone, gold (yellow or rose) might be preferable. White gold offers a hybrid alternative, though with modest trade-offs in maintenance and slightly in long-term durability.
