Concept- Properties of metals.Metals which contain alloy with very low melting points are generally liquid at room temperature.
At room temperature mercury is liquid. This is because its electrons are more tightly bound to the nucleus than usual. Mercury’s Question Image orbital is completely filled. Its electronic configuration is so unique that its outer orbital comes close to the nucleus. This is the reason why mercury is liquid at room temperature.
Additional information about mercury is that, Mercury is used in fluorescent lamps, thermometers, dental amalgams, medicines etc.
