Silver becomes black in the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas in air.
Silver reacts with H2S gas present in air and becomes black due to formation of silver sulfide (Ag2S). This is the reason that silver ornaments and jewellery become dull due to accumulation of black Ag2S on their surface. The chemical equation of silver(Ag) and hydrogen sulphide(H2S) to form silver sulphide(Ag2S)  and hydrogen(H2) gas is given below:
Ag + H2S → Ag2S + H2
