In February 1922, the non-cooperation movement was withdrawn. Due to various incidents of violence caused by the masses, and especially because of the Chauri Chaura incident of 1922. After this particular incident at Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur, the mass struggle turned violent. It led to the murder of twenty-two police officers and many more wounded as the violent protestors burned down the police station. This kind of violence, while following the non-cooperation movement, made Gandhi realise that people had to be trained properly for them to be ready for any mass struggle that was to take place.
