The most significant success in providing credit to the underprivileged at fair rates is the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh. Over 6 million customers of Grameen Bank today live in 40,000 villages throughout Bangladesh. Most borrowers are female and come from the lowest socioeconomic strata. Prof. Mohammad Yunus, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, is the inventor of this concept.
