Which of the constituent is / are responsible for continuous burning in Holmes signal

Mixture of calcium phosphide and calcium carbide is used in Holmes signal. In this mixture, continuous combustion of phosphine takes place which acts as a signal. A container filled with the mixture of calcium phosphide and calcium carbide throws in the sea. The formation of two gases, PH₃ and C₂H₂ burns and serve as a signal.
