The Poona Pact gave seats to the depressed classes in the Provincial and Central Legislative Council.
The Poona Pact was an agreement signed on September 24, 1932, by Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B.R. Ambedkar on behalf of upper-caste Hindu leaders and the lower classes on reserving seats for the depressed classes in the assembly of the British Indian government for members of the lower classes.
At the second Round Table Conference, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who in 1930 organised the Dalits into the Depressed Classes Association, fought with Mahatma Gandhi by calling for separate electorates for Dalits. Gandhi started a fast until his death when the British government agreed to Ambedkar's demand. In the end, Ambedkar sided with Gandhi, and the Poona Pact of September 1932 was the consequence.
